Civil student team members, L – R: Christina Noël, Anthony McGill, Daniel Vandervelden, Diane Currie, Josh Veillard, Amir Afrasiabi, Yezi Zhang, Matthew Cheung, and Simon Pelta at the APEGBC Richmond/Delta Branch Engineering and Geoscience Fair at Lansdowne Centre

At a recent APEGBC Engineering and Geoscience Fair, held as part of National Engineering and Geoscience Month (NEGM), three Civil student teams joined forces to represent Civil Engineering and to promote awareness of engineering and geoscience in the community. The Steel Bridge Team, the EERI Seismic Design Team, and the Concrete Canoe Team united to enter the Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition – a popular NEGM event that demonstrates to the public, and to children in particular, how interesting and fun civil engineering student projects can be. The group placed first in the post-secondary/student teams category, with a popsicle stick bridge that was able to withstand 410 pounds before breaking, setting a competition record for the strongest bridge built to date! Participation in the Fair gave the student teams a great opportunity to interact with members of the public, and to connect with industry professionals in the Richmond/Delta region.
