Congratulations Civil Class of 2014
On May 27, 2014, a Graduation Reception for the Civil Engineering Class of 2014 took place in the Wayne & William White Engineering Design Centre. A large number of graduating students attended with their friends and family members, to celebrate and hear remarks from Professor Reza Vaziri, Head of the Department; Professor Bernard Laval, Associate Head of Undergraduate Students; and Professor Terje Haukaas, Associate Head, Graduate Programs.
Several graduating students were honoured for their achievements during their time at UBC. Undergraduate Academic Achievement Awards went to: Christopher (Chris) Young, who was the head of the graduating class with an overall average of 93.6%, and who also received a Faculty of Applied Science Prize in Academic Excellence; Nicholas Gagliano, who had an overall average of 91.6%, and who also received an Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEG) Gold Medal; and Mark Robinson, who had an overall average of 91%.
The Civil Engineering Undergraduate Leadership Award went to Michael Levin, who achieved an impressive cumulative average of 80% over 152 credits of coursework in his B.A.Sc. program in Civil Engineering in addition to demonstrating leadership through his role as President of the Civil Engineering Club.
The following students received a Civil Engineering Undergraduate Design Award for their excellent coursework as a group: Christopher Young, Terilyn Brito, Terrence Tang, Daniel Tse, Eduardo Fujiwara Ceravolo, and Noppanat Rangsimahariwong. This team was one of 25 design groups in CIVL 445 & 446, Engineering Design and Analysis I & II. The team’s design was judged to have addressed most of the courses’ design requirements and the group’s overall performance in both courses was amongst the best. The combined mark for the conceptual design, poster presentation, detailed project proposal, oral presentation and final report was the highest in the class. All six team members worked hard on the design project and carried it out in a professional manner.
The reception was a memorable occasion for all who attended, and a fitting celebration for many parents and other loved ones who stood so proudly alongside the students throughout their studies and during the momentous occasion of graduation. This year 169 students from the Department of Civil Engineering officially graduated: 120 undergraduates (B.A.Sc.), 11 M.A.Sc., 33 M.Eng., and 5 Ph.D..
