NSERC CRD leverages BC Hydro Grant-In-Aid Program at CIVL

Tuesday, May 18, 2010 | By

The overall objective of the NSERC- and BC Hydro-funded research is to develop a practical way of optimizing the operation of a large scale hydro system. Other objectives aim at enhancing the Civil Engineering program at UBC and to strengthen collaboration between Civil Engineering, UBC and BC Hydro.

The BC Hydro Grant-In-Aid program supports an ongoing phase in a long-range research program sponsored by BC Hydro and follow on from a previous CRD grant. Topics to be explored through this applied research program include: development of practical stochastic optimization methods for multi-reservoir system operation; assessing the impacts of integrating renewable energy resources in a large-scale hydro system; development of decision support tools for renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty; and development of practical risk and decision analysis tools for managing extreme river flow events.
