Dr. Ruth Derksen is a Senior Instructor with the Department of Civil Engineering and Materials Engineering. Dr. Derksen completed a PhD (2008) in the “Philosophy of Language” at the University of Sheffield in the UK. Her BA (1995) and MA (1999) at Simon Fraser University focused on discourse analysis, genre theory and rhetoric. Dr. Derksen currently teaches professional communication courses and has designed new curricula that integrate these courses into various engineering departments.
Proficiencies required by students entering first year post-secondary English courses; investigation of the gap between international students’ assumptions about success and a Technical Communication instructor’s measurement of that success; and, designing and revising pedagogical approaches to current communications courses offered in Applied Science.
