Once a year the Department of Civil Engineering welcomes visiting students from other universities or institutes. Visiting students must be registered at UBC as a Visiting Undergraduate Research Student and must be in good standing at another recognized university with the purpose of doing research only. VURS are are not eligible to take classes at UBC.

To be admitted

Visiting students must provide evidence of good standing in a degree program at a recognized university or university college. Visiting students must also be approved first by a faculty member at UBC, and the student should complete the online application form for Non-Degree Studies.

Admissions Process

Prior to Arrival
All applicants must submit the following forms to our office prior to their arrival:

  • Letter of sponsorship from a Civil Engineering Faculty member
  • Copy of thier completed VURS online application form with proof of payment for any applicable fees.
  • Official Letter of Permission from the home university's Registrar and/or Department Head confirming that the student is here to complete a research project in order to meet the degree requirements of the University.

Once all supporting documents have been received by our office, we will forward your application to the UBC Admissions Office. A Letter of Invitation from our Department to the student will follow. This letter allows the student to apply for a study permit.

Upon Arrival

Upon arrival, the student must report to the Front Desk at the Civil Eningeering Department. Students will be advised at this time of their UBC student number and will be registered into the non-credit activity VURS499.

The UBC student number will allow the student to have access to a library card and student accident insurance ($7CDN). Student will also receive an official transcript to verify their attendance.

Should the sponsoring Faculty member decide to give a stipend to the student, the student will require a Social Insurance Number (SIN). This number (or a copy of the completed application), must be submitted to our office for processing.

Fees

Upon arrival, students will be assessed additional fees. (*All fees are subject to without notice)

This plan is required unless you opt out within 3 weeks of your arrival. In order to opt out, you will need proof of coverage for both extended health and dental. Note: if you arrive after January the plan is $134.31 and it runs through till August.

Note: If you have arrived from August to October, you are required to pay fees for both school years. However, if you are here over two different UBC terms in the same school year, you will only be charged the per term fees for both terms.
