Biography:
Dr. Staub-French earned her BSCE from Santa Clara University (1993) in California, and her MSCE (1998) and PhD (2002) from Stanford University.Research Interests:
My research focuses on the development of model-based tools that help project teams analyze facility designs from the construction and operational perspective. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is central to my research. The goal of this research is to formalize the underlying construction and operational knowledge in the context of a BIM representation and development process. The following summarizes my primary research interests:
- Analysis: This research investigates the implications of different design decisions and conditions on different stakeholders. We recently developed a ‘query-based’ approach to extract construction-specific design features from a BIM. We are currently investigating building performance and operation from the perspective of energy and maintenance management.
- Coordination: This research focuses on understanding the design coordination process in a 3D modeling environment and the constraints governing the design, installation, and operation of the different building systems.
- Collaboration: This research investigates the meeting process and artifact utilization in different meeting environments, the interactions project teams have with different forms of representational artifacts, and the requirements for digital environments to facilitate the coordination of design and construction activities. I have acquired a ‘BIM Trailer’ to facilitate this research, which consists of a construction trailer outfitted with large-screen, interactive displays configured in an integrated computing environment that is arranged for group collaboration.
- Visualization: This research investigates techniques for visualizing construction process information with particular emphasis on 3D and 4D (3D + time) visualization of construction strategies and comparative visualization of construction bar-chart schedules.
- Organization: This research explores the BIM adoption process and the different factors that affect successful implementation. This work is case study driven and aims to identify BIM ‘best practices’ related to three critical dimensions of Technology, Organization, and Process (TOP).
