Technical Electives
for fourth year students
Students in the general Civil Engineering stream must obtain 12 credits
of technical electives to graduate. Those in the Environmental Option
must complete 3 credits of technical electives.
A technical elective is any 3rd or 4th year Civil course that is not
part of your core program. In addition, students are encouraged to consider
courses offered by other departments, as these could be approved as acceptable
technical electives.
For 2012/13, students register for technical electives during the normal course registration period. If a course is full, students must complete an add/drop form at the Civil Engineering Front Desk.
Students do not submit their five ranked preferences for technical electives as was done last year.
NOTE: Students cannot register for more than four technical electifves without special permission. This is to ensure that there is sufficient space in our courses to accommodate all fourth-year students. Students who wish to take more than four technical elective courses MUST obtain the prior approval of the Fourth Year Advisor. Send an email to the Fourth Year advisor with a list of all your technical electives and a strong rationale for why you should be given special permission to take more than four.
Any student who registers for more than four technical electives and fails to obtain prior approval to do so will be dropped from ALL technical electives at the beginning of the Fall term. These students will then be limited to taking electives that still have space at the beginning of the Fall term.

Approval
Other 300 or 400 level courses at UBC that complement and enhance the civil engineering programme may also be taken as a technical elective.
To request approval for a course not listed above, please e-mail your request to the Fourth Year Advisor. Include in this request the course name, code, and its description. (These are available in the online calendar.) Also, in one or two sentences, please state why you think that the course you have chosen will complement and enhance your engineering education. (A response will be sent to you via return e-mail. Please print and retain a copy of this response until you have graduated.)
For courses outside Civil Engineering, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain approval of registration from the course instructor. Documentation of such approval should be submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering by the Add/Drop date.
